The most anticipated weekend of the spring 2009 semester proved to be the best of the schoolyear. On April 18th, the actives of Omega Delta participated in the third annual Relay For Life sponsored by the American Cancer Society on Mason’s campus.

In 2007, the Alpha set a goal of $300, and met it. In 2008, the Alpha raised $1,620, and this year we set an incredibly ambitious goal of $4,000. Not only was that goal reached but it was surpassed! This year, the Alpha raised $5,855.42! That’s over fifteen percent of the entire $35,303 raised at this year’s event.

From the generosity of friends, family, and alumni, the actives ended the weekend as the top fundraising team. Omega Delta raised more than $2,600 more than the second-place team, Kappa Alpha who raised $3,200. This is proof that the Alpha’s efforts not only forced them to work hard to reach their goals, but also raised the bar for all teams to raise more money for a great cause.

Individually, the Alpha dominated the top ten fundraisers:

  • #2 Max Liffers(`10) – $950
  • #3 Corey Callahan (`09) – $820
  • #4 The Pledges (now New Inititates) – $725
  • #9 Teddy (`10) & Joey (`12) Meyer – $468

The group walked in memory of Brother Malcom D. “Jack” Jeffrey who passed away from cancer in early 2009.  The Alpha also participated in memory of Mr. Mark Garrow, the late uncle of Brother Jacob Szewczyk (`10), and Mrs. Linda Ahlberg, the late wife of Dr. Dan Ahlberg(Nu `67). Though we were honoring those who have lost their lives to cancer and hoping our funds will help prevent it, there was a great sense of pride felt by all Chi Psi’s in attendance.

The Alpha would like to thank everyone who donated their time and money to helping us reach our goals this year and in those past. We look forward to your continued support in 2010! For more information, please visit www.gmurelay.org.

Georg Schlaiss (striped shirt), he’s German, and dresses better than most of us. He’s a sophomore government major, and just finished an internship with the Daimler AG office in DC.

Phillip Sullivan (second from left), a licensed veterinary technician and junior biology major from Alexandria, VA. Phil likes eel soup and the philosophical lyrics of 3OH!3.

J.P. Kostecki (far left), is our resident drummer from Yorktown ,VA. Unlike those of us who slave away at tedious summer jobs or summer school, J.P. is a member of the Carolina Crown drumline and Mason’s own Green Machine competitive drum line.

Sean Kelly (far right), a native of Aldie, VA is a freshman who is still undecided about what he’d like to study. Hopefully he’ll figure that out soon.

Driss Benkirane (in front), is a freshman from Casablanca, Morocco, who is a big fan of the Georgetown neighborhood of DC and is fluent in French.

Welcome, guys!
